Mom and Dad was the brain child of Writer/Director Brian Taylor (Crank, Gamer, Ghost Rider) surrounding the thought, “what would happen if parents turned against their children, and how would their children react?” Taylor is known for his darker, more twisted perspective on social situations, often adding a subtle, darker humor to these otherwise morbid subject matters. Taylor states, “human behavior and consciousness fascinates me, and diving into situations in which you can explore the depths of these psyches is what drives most of my projects. This is especially true with Mom and Dad.”
With the script written, Brian began his search for a production partner, someone to help bring his creation from paper to reality. Enter production company and financier Armory Films, with partners Christopher Lemole and Tim Zajaros. Lemole and Zajaros had most recently come off of films Zombeavers (2014) and the Cabin Fever (2016) and were looking to add to their line-up of projects, which included Billionaire Boys Club, The Midnight Man, and the Dee Rees directed film Mudbound. “We read the script and immediately fell in love with the project. With four kids of my own, I’ve definitely felt the struggles of being a parent, and it was an interesting idea on taking those feelings to the extreme.”
Armed with the right team, Lemole and Zajaros began their search for the perfect cast.
“We knew it wouldn’t be an easy task given the dark subject matter of the film,” said Zajaros, “but it was a challenge we were looking forward to overcoming.” Taylor, of course, had an encouraging idea for the role of the father, Brent Ryan, and that was Nicolas Cage. Taylor had already developed a relationship with Cage after they did Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and Taylor knew that Cage would be perfect for the role. “Cage is an extremely talented actor who isn’t afraid to take on more challenging, out of the box roles.
This role in particular was one that I knew he would blow out of the water.” Cage read the script and responded positively to the part, and fully signed on to the project.
With Cage cast, the other roles began filling up quickly. “There was a lot of interest now that the duo Cage and Taylor were back together, but we were still having difficulty casting the mother, due to the sensitive subject matter of the story,” said Lemole. However, the right person did come along, in the form of Selma Blair. “Selma is an incredible actress with the talent to handle this type of film, and I couldn’t have been happier that she was interested in the project,” Taylor exclaimed. Indeed, with the two main leads cast with outstanding talent, the film was well on its way to becoming reality.
With the cast coming together, Lemole and Zajaros continued approaching financiers to acquire the remaining capital for the film. With their connections through previous films and their business partner, Cassian Elwes, they began conversations with The Fyzz, a London based finance and production company, as well as Three Point Capital, a financing company based in Manhattan Beach, CA. Both companies couldn’t have been more thrilled with the script and cast. With the addition of these two companies, Mom and Dad was coming together nicely. Zajaros stated, “We couldn’t be happier rounding out the team with Three Point and The Fyzz, both great companies and partners.”
With the date of principal production quickly approaching, the team began to set up its base in Kentucky, where the film would be shot. While the production office was being set up, the remaining cast was set up, bringing in both Anne Winters (The Tribe, Flirting with Madness) to play Carly Ryan and Zakary Arthur (The 5th Wave) to play Joshua Ryan.
“The pace really picked up and everything began falling into place once we were closing in on PP. We couldn’t have asked for a smoother ocean to sail,” said Lemole.
Perhaps the hardest part was yet to come for the team, however, and that was creating a film that was able to capture the dark elements in Taylor’s script in a manner that didn’t deter people from watching the film. The selected cast and entire team behind the shoot was able to do just that. “I was amazed at everyone’s hard work and determination to bring this project to life. I’m unbelievably happy with the end result and I think we’ve created something that can be enjoyed by people around the globe,” remarked Taylor.
